JOHNNY Mullins' first goal of the season ensured the Mark Yates era at Kidderminster Harriers got off to a winning start with a hard-fought victory at Woking today.
The young Reading defender shot home from 12-yards deep into the second half to score the game's only goal, and the victory was nothing more than the visitors performance, in the first half especially deserved.
The defence stayed solid to the very end despite a particularly shaky beginning, keeping out numerous Woking attacks. John Danby was arguably the hero of the day for Yates' men, with the stopper pulling of a string of fine saves to redeem himself for two costly errors in the Altrincham defeat recently.
The pick of the bunch came from Craig McAllister's 60th minute header, which Danby somehow managed to get the faintest of touches on to send it wide. The ball had been destined for the back of the net and the look of disbelief on McAllister's face clearly showed the story.
Despite being on the winning side at the end of the day Danby was definitely the busier of the two custodians throughout the course of the game, doing well to keep out efforts from Jimmy Aggrey and top-scorer Justin Richards.
Harriers could've had their noses in front earlier than they actually did after a fine piece of play between Gareth Sheldon and Iyseden Christie in the first half presented the former Exeter man with an inviting one on one with 'keeper Shwan Jalal. Sheldon did all the hard work in beating Jalal with his effort, only to go one better in beating the far post, too, with his shot going agonisingly wide.
After the visitors soaked up plenty of pressure for the majority of the first period, they immediately controlled proceedings after the break with Sheldon getting forward well in the opening stages and Terry Fleming - another true star of the day for Harriers - bossing midfield.
Russ Penn forced a decent save from Jalal with the half around eight minutes old, but it was around the hour mark that the side really began to press. Sheldon unleashed a strong shot from 18 yards that forced Jalal into action once again, and from the resulting corner Harriers took the lead.
Fleming shipped the ball in to the waiting MULLINS, who managed to smash the ball high into the back of the net from inside the area.
From then it was 'backs to the wall' for the visitors as Glenn Cockerill's men pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Mark Jackson and Co. coped superbly with great dedication, Fleming throwing his entire body in front of the ball to block one shot whilst a grounded Jackson himself managed to keep possession with both outstretched legs.
Richards missed another good chance for Woking during four minutes of added time, but today was Harriers' day, with the three points sealing a gritty-not-pretty performance.
